Anna Shumate: The Impact Of Online Harassment

The survey focused on online harassment harms and remedies and included questions about demographics, personal values, societal issues, social media habits, and online harassment. We conducted three online surveys with us adult internet users measuring perceived harms and preferred remedies associated with online harassment. Individuals from minoritized social identities disproportionately experience online harassment and abuse.

Nih is committed to supporting research to better understand the health impacts of online harassment and abuse to inform intervention efforts to ensure online safety. One in four american women have experienced online abuse, with women from mixed ethnic backgrounds reporting the highest rates of online abuse at 37%, followed by latina or hispanic women at 31%. The most frequent type of online abuse experienced by american women was cyberbullying (10%), followed by sexual harassment (9%) and trolling (8%). We introduce pmcr framework, as a way to focus on needs for prevention, monitoring, crisis and recovery.

A recent survey of american adults found over 40 percent have experienced offensive name calling, stalking, physical threats and other forms of harassment online, with a majority saying they find such harassment to be a major problem (vogels, 2021).
