Sangaku are japanese geometrical problems or theorems on wooden tablets which were placed as offerings at shinto shrines or buddhist temples during the edo period by members of all. In this thesis i argue that an examination of the creation, location, and writings on these tablets by their authors shows sangaku had multiple functions and should be considered artistic,. These theorems appeared as beautifully colored drawings on wooden tablets which were hung under one of the roof in the precincts of a shrine or temple. The tablet was called a sangaku.
