There's a hay dispenser in the coops and barns that you can also take the hay from to put it in the trough. One silo is fine for a couple chickens (one could technically work for an entire farm full of animals by taking hay and placing in chest to keep silo from getting full, but what a hassle). If you let them roam outside (preferably fenced in an area) they'll eat grass and be happier for it. Simply put, silos are for storing hay for your animals.
